Sony Bravia KDL-46W5100 LCD HDTV
My Sony 46" Bravia has been in use for a good 8 months now delivering flawless picture quality, effortless setup and excellent usability features. Here's a rundown of the features that I've had a chance to review:
- Picture Quality / Contrast Ratio - A system’s contrast ratio refers to the diversity in colors between both the brightest and darkest color it can produce, with a higher ratio resulting in superior overall image quality. The KDL-46S5100 has a Dynamic Contrast Ratio of 30000:1 while the KDL-46W5100 has a notably higher ratio of 100000:1.
- Motionflow Technology - Motionflow technology reproduces crisp, picture perfect quality in fast-paced action scenes. The KDL-46W5100 provides a smooth 120hz refresh rate compared to the KDL-46S5100 which offers 60hz.
- Level of Connectivity - Sony’s KDL-46W5100 offers an impressive level of connectivity with HDMI four ports alongside USB connectivity for photo viewing and mp3 players. The KDL-46S5100 has only three ports and does not feature USB connectivity.
The KDL-46V5100 features several improvements over the previous S5100 series at only a small increase in price. It is the next step up in LCD HDTV technology. Below is a list of features separating the V5100 and W5100:
- Internet and Media Features - Internet and media features set KDL-46W5100 apart from the lesser KDL-46V5100 and KDL-46S5100. With the W5100, using a remote and a broadband connection, customers will have access to a host of premium online content such as movies or streaming video content from a constantly expanding list. Additionally, Bravia Internet Widgets allow you to resize and adjust widgets on your screen to stay up to date on sports, weather, news and more.
- Bravia Engine Technology - The Bravia Engine 2 used in the KDL-46S5100 and KDL-46V5100 loses to the KDL-46W5100 and its improved Bravia Engine 3 which offers improved image detail.
- Picture Modes - The KDL-46W5100 features added picture modes for greater customization, including: sports, game, graphics, photo-vivid, photo-standard, photo-custom, and photo-original.

My favourite feature is Bravia Sync which powers on and off the Bravia TV and/or Sony device as well as changing the input on the fly. This allows even my young children to easily start the Playstation 3 and have the Bravia TV respond in turn by changing inputs from whatever they were watching before. Furthermore, the sound from my Sony DVD with Audio amplifier syncs the sound signal so that simply by turning the device on, the surround system echoes the TV audio output through the 5 channel speakers.
Another brilliant function is input labeling. It seems brainless now, I'm sure other TV's have the same thing, but this is my first to carry the feature. My wife doesn't have to guess and memorize what "Input 2" meant because when the list appears, my custom label is shown next to a customizable icon.
Originally connected to my Geforce 7950 SLI graphics card for HTPC functionality, I used a DVI to HDMI converter cable to make the connection. With the new Radeon 5850 it seemed over time that the input signal was becoming slightly corrupted, with the TV restarting in a loop periodically. It sounds unusual to head this in a digital context: it should work or not work. But depending on her mood at the time, the system would either deliver the signal and display it or loop endlessly for no good reason.
This gave me a chance to try updating the TV firmware with a flash memory stick in the USB port. Simply by downloading the firmware at esupport.sony.com I plugged the drive into the side port and let the update run itself. It would have been even easier if I had a router nearby, but my network is all wireless and the TV doesn't have a built-in wireless nic.
This didn't fix the problem, but I'm sure other issues were resolved and features added. In the end I swapped my HDMI cables around to use the output from the Radeon 5850 rather than DVI-HDMI conversion. So far so good! No scaling issues to report and the restart issue is gone based on initial testing.
